Diagnostic features
## Identification Bernardite can be identified by its black color, metallic luster, and occurrence in massive aggregates or small, poorly developed crystals. Key features include very low hardness (approximately 2 on the Mohs scale) and high density. However, identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as chemical analysis (EDS/WDS) to confirm the presence of thallium and arsenic in appropriate proportions. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other black, metallic thallium sulfosalts, such as lorandite, or other sulfides. Distinguishing it from pierrotite, rebulite, or other minerals from the sartorite group is impossible without specialized X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical analyses. In field conditions, it is practically impossible to identify unambiguously. ## Crystal Forms Bernardite crystals are rare and poorly developed. They take on a platy or tabular form, often flattened. It typically occurs as massive, granular, or fibrous aggregates, in which individual grains are anhedral (lacking their own crystal faces).
Geological environment
## Genesis Bernardite is a mineral of low-temperature hydrothermal origin. It forms in gold, arsenic, antimony, and thallium deposits. In the type locality (Allchar), it is associated with mineralization deposited in andesitic tuffs and lacustrine sediments from the Pliocene period. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare thallium sulfosalts and sulfides. The most common associated minerals include: realgar, orpiment, lorandite, raguinite, pierrotite, parapierrotite, rebulite, as well as marcasite and pyrite. ## Localities Confirmed occurrences of bernardite are limited to just a few places worldwide. The most important and type locality is the Allchar (Alsar) deposit near the town of Majden in North Macedonia. Additionally, it has been reported in the Jiepaiyu mine in Shaanxi Province, China.

## Quality Criteria As an extremely rare mineral, every analytically confirmed bernardite specimen is valuable to specialized collectors. Samples with well-visible, even if small, well-formed crystals are most highly prized. Rich association with other rare thallium minerals, such as lorandite or orpiment, also enhances its appeal, especially if they originate from the type locality in Allchar. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector specimens is the historic Allchar deposit in North Macedonia. Material from this locality is highly sought after and practically unavailable on the commercial market, primarily going to institutional collections and leading private collectors specializing in mineral systematics.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Bernardite is very soft and potentially chemically sensitive. Cleaning should be kept to an absolute minimum. If necessary, a very soft brush can be used to remove dust. Avoid water and any chemical agents. ## What to Avoid The mineral contains toxic thallium and arsenic, so direct skin contact should be avoided, and hands should be thoroughly washed after any contact. It must not be heated, as this can lead to the release of toxic fumes. It should be protected from moisture, acids, detergents, and ultrasonics. As a sulfide, it may be susceptible to oxidation in a humid environment. ## Storage Bernardite specimens should be stored under stable conditions, in a dry place, away from sunlight and heat sources. It is best kept in a closed, padded display box to prevent mechanical damage and limit air exposure. Due to its toxicity, it should be stored out of reach of children and pets, with an appropriate warning label.
