Diagnostic features
## Identification Identification of benauite is based on its characteristic appearance – small, sharp, rhombohedral crystals of yellowish-brown color and vitreous luster. It occurs in a specific geological environment. Due to the size of the crystals, a stereoscopic microscope is essential for observation. Final confirmation of identity requires advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Benauite can be confused with other minerals from the goyazite group, such as kintoreite or segnitite, which form similar crystals and occur in comparable parageneses. Distinguishing them "by eye" is practically impossible and requires chemical analysis to determine the dominant elements (strontium and iron in the case of benauite). ## Crystal Forms Benauite crystallizes in the form of small, sharply terminated rhombohedra. Crystals rarely occur individually; more often, they form radial aggregates, rosettes, or crusts on the surface of other minerals.
Geological environment
## Genesis Benauite is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation (weathering) zones of ore deposits, particularly in hydrothermal veins containing baryte, fluorite, and metal sulfides. In its type locality (Clara mine), it formed as a result of hydrothermal processes occurring in gneissic and granitic rocks. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other secondary phosphates, arsenates, and sulfates. It is most commonly associated with goethite, quartz, baryte, fluorite, segnitite, kintoreite, arsenogoyazite, and various minerals from the jarosite group. ## Localities In addition to the type locality in the Clara mine in Germany, the presence of benauite has also been confirmed in several other locations worldwide, including the "Grube Reichskrone" mine in Thuringia (Germany) and the "Wentworth" mine in Broken Hill, New South Wales (Australia). All these sites are locations with complex, polymetallic mineral parageneses.

## Quality Criteria The quality of benauite specimens is primarily assessed based on the sharpness and size of the crystals, although these rarely exceed fractions of a millimeter. Most valued are samples with well-isolated, sharp crystals of intense, yellowish-brown color, forming aesthetic groups or rosettes. The contrast with the host rock (matrix) on which the crystals occur is also important – most often this is goethite or quartz. ## Popular Localities By far the most known and valued benauite specimens come from its type locality – the Clara mine in Oberwolfach, Germany. This is a classic locality for many rare secondary minerals, and specimens from there are the standard for this species.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens with benauite, due to their small size and brittleness, should be cleaned very carefully. The safest method is to use compressed air to remove dust. If wet cleaning is necessary, use only distilled water and a very soft brush, avoiding strong rubbing. Ultrasonic cleaning is not recommended. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids and other aggressive chemicals that can damage or destroy the delicate crystals. The mineral is stable under normal conditions, but it should be protected from mechanical damage. ## Storage Micromounted specimens of benauite should be stored in specialized, sealed boxes (micromount boxes) that protect them from dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, although there is no evidence of fading.
