The crystals are usually transparent to translucent and exhibit a vitreous luster on crystal faces, and a greasy luster on fracture surfaces. ## Colors and Varieties The dominant color of belovite-(Ce) is yellow, in shades from pale yellow to honey-yellow and greenish-yellow. No named commercial or color varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from the Russian crystallographer Nikolai Vasilyevich Belov (1891-1982). The suffix -(Ce) in the name indicates the dominant rare earth element in its composition – cerium. The mineral was first described in 1954 based on material from the Khibiny Massif in Russia. ## Uses Belovite-(Ce) has no industrial application. It is valued solely as a collector's mineral due to its rarity, attractive crystal form, and origin.

Differentiation requires advanced analytical methods, such as chemical composition analysis (EDS/WDS) to confirm the presence of sodium, strontium, and cerium. Visually, it can be similar to some yellow tourmalines, but it differs from them in hardness and occurrence environment. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are typically elongated, prismatic, terminated by flat pinacoids. They often form radial aggregates, where acicular crystals radiate from a single center.

## Genesis Belovite-(Ce) is a mineral of magmatic origin. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in nepheline syenite pegmatites, which are alkaline rocks rich in rare earth elements. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other rare minerals of alkaline pegmatites, such as eudialyte, lorenzenite, lamprophyllite, murmanite, nepheline, microcline, aegirine, and minerals from the apatite group. ## Localities The most important and classic occurrences of this mineral are in Russia, in the alkaline massifs of the Kola Peninsula (Khibiny and Lovozero). The best collector's specimens originate from there. It is also known from the Ilimaussaq igneous complex in Greenland.

## Quality Criteria The most prized specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, sharp, and undamaged crystals of intense, honey-yellow color. Rich radial aggregates and aesthetic compositions with other rare minerals, such as eudialyte, are also highly valued. Crystal size rarely exceeds 1-2 cm, so larger specimens are exceptionally sought after. ## Popular Localities By far the most desirable specimens come from the Lovozero Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Localities such as Mount Karnasurt or Kedykverpakhk have yielded the best known specimens of this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned only with lukewarm distilled water and a very soft brush, removing dust and loose dirt. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided as they can damage delicate crystals. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids, which can damage it. Contact with household and laboratory chemicals should be avoided. It should not be heated or exposed to sudden temperature changes. ## Storage Collector's specimens of belovite-(Ce) are best stored in separate, padded boxes to prevent scratches and mechanical damage. They should be protected from dust and direct, prolonged exposure to sunlight.
