Diagnostic features
## Identification The key diagnostic feature of baylissite is its complete solubility in water. Its occurrence as delicate, white, acicular crystals in dry environments is also very characteristic. It reacts with acids, releasing carbon dioxide bubbles, however, this test is destructive and not recommended due to the mineral's rarity and fragility. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Baylissite can be confused with other soluble secondary minerals, such as chalcanthite (usually blue) or epsomite. Differentiation often requires chemical analysis (EDS/XRD). It is distinguished from visually similar but insoluble minerals (e.g., some zeolites like natrolite) by its immediate reaction to a drop of water. ## Crystal Forms Baylissite forms very fine, elongated crystals with an acicular or capillary habit. These crystals often arrange themselves into radial aggregates resembling small stars or fans, and also form felted masses and thin coatings on rocks.

## Genesis Baylissite is a secondary mineral, forming under very specific, dry conditions. It forms as an evaporation product of potassium- and magnesium-rich solutions on rock surfaces. It is a typical efflorescent mineral found in dry climates, mines, or caves, where it is protected from direct rainfall. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often occurs alone as the sole crystallization product on the surface of the host rock. Depending on the locality, it may be associated with other evaporites. ## Localities Major confirmed baylissite localities worldwide include: the uranium mine near Temple Mountain in Emery County, Utah (USA), where it forms efflorescences on mine walls; and the lignite mine near Balassagyarmat in Hungary. It has also been identified in samples from an unspecified locality in Australia.

## Quality Criteria The most desirable baylissite specimens are those with well-visible, rich clusters of acicular crystals, forming aesthetic, radial aggregates on a small rock matrix. Purity (lack of contamination) and the integrity of the delicate crystals are crucial. Due to the nature of the mineral, the size of individual crystals is less important than the overall appearance and richness of the aggregate. ## Popular Localities Specimens from the Temple Mountain mine in Utah are considered classic and most representative of this mineral. They are highly sought after by collectors specializing in rare mineral species.
Care and storage
## Cleaning This mineral **must not be wet cleaned**, as it is water-soluble. Any contact with water, even a damp cloth, will destroy the specimen. Dust can be removed very carefully with a soft brush or a stream of dry, compressed air from a distance. ## What to Avoid Avoid water, cleaning solutions, acids, and alcohol. The mineral is sensitive to atmospheric moisture, so it should not be stored in damp environments, such as basements. It should be protected from high temperatures, which can cause the loss of water from its structure (dehydration). ## Storage Baylissite specimens must be stored in dry conditions. The best solution is a sealed, airtight container (a "perky box") with a desiccant, such as silica gel. It should be displayed away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
