Bavsiite is a very rare barium vanadium silicate, forming blue, tabular crystals with a vitreous luster.

## Characteristics Bavsiite is an extremely rare mineral from the silicate group, chemically classified as a barium vanadium silicate. It occurs as very small, tabular or platy crystals, reaching sizes up to 0.3 x 0.1 x 0.02 mm. It typically forms radial aggregates or appears as single, disseminated crystals. Its most characteristic feature is its intense blue color. ## Physical Properties Bavsiite crystals exhibit a vitreous luster. The mineral is transparent to translucent. Due to the small size of the crystals, hardness has not been precisely measured, but it is estimated to be around 4-5 on the Mohs scale. The density calculated based on the chemical formula and unit cell parameters is 4.65 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is monochromatic and occurs exclusively in shades of blue. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Bavsiite was discovered in the dumps of the Nazarevskoye barite mine, in the Tiry-Tjuning mountain range (Arga Ridge) in the southern part of Yakutia, Russia. It was approved as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1990. Its name is an acronym derived from its chemical composition: Ba (barium), V (vanadium), Si (silicon). ## Applications Bavsiite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and collectible due to its extreme rarity and unique chemical composition.

## Identification Identification of bavsiite is based on its unique characteristics: intense blue color, tabular or platy shape of very small crystals, and specific occurrence environment. Positive identification is only possible using advanced analytical methods, such as energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS/EDX) or X-ray diffraction (XRD), which can confirm its unique chemical composition (presence of barium, vanadium, and silicon). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Bavsiite can be confused with other rare, blue secondary minerals. It is distinguished from papagoite by its crystal habit (papagoite is usually microcrystalline or forms inclusions). It is distinguished from linarite by its lack of reaction with acids and a different geological environment. However, definitive differentiation requires chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms The crystals are very small, thin, and tabular, often elongated, with a rectangular or platy outline. They usually form small, radial or randomly oriented aggregates on the surface of the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Bavsiite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in barite-quartz veins cutting sandstones. Its formation is associated with the interaction of hydrothermal solutions with sedimentary rocks rich in organic matter, which was the source of vanadium. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with barite, quartz, and also with rare barium minerals such as tokyoite and anandite. At the discovery site, it was also accompanied by mica, pyrite, and titanite. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of bavsiite in the world is its type locality – the abandoned Nazarevskoye barite mine, located on the Arga Ridge in southern Yakutia, Russia.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a bavsiite specimen is primarily assessed based on the abundance and visibility of crystals on the rock matrix. Samples with numerous, well-formed, intensely blue crystals forming visually attractive aggregates are most desirable. Due to the microscopic size of the crystals, their concentration and contrast with the surrounding barite or quartz are crucial. The size of individual crystals, even if a fraction of a millimeter, also increases the value of the specimen. ## Popular Localities The only source of bavsiite specimens is its type locality in Yakutia (Russia). All samples available on the collector's market originate from this single location.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to the extreme delicacy and small size of the crystals, mechanical cleaning is not recommended. If absolutely necessary, compressed air (from a safe distance) can be used to remove loose dust particles. Avoid contact with water and any chemicals. ## What to Avoid Avoid ultrasonics, steam cleaners, acids, solvents, and sudden temperature changes. The crystals are very brittle and susceptible to mechanical damage. Samples should be protected from vibrations and impacts. ## Storage Bavsiite specimens should be stored exclusively in specialized "micromount" boxes that protect them from physical damage and dust. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, although there is no data on its effect on color stability.
