Diagnostic features
## Identification A key diagnostic feature is the excellent cleavage in two directions, which causes the mineral to easily split into thin lamellae with a pearly luster. A violent reaction with hydrochloric acid (effervescence) is also a confirming characteristic. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other colorless or white minerals from alkaline pegmatites, such as natrite or thermonatrite. It is distinguished from them by the presence of aluminum in its composition, higher hardness, and characteristic cleavage. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are rare and appear as thin, tabular plates. It usually forms lamellar, scaly, or granular aggregates embedded in the rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis It forms in late, low-temperature stages of hydrothermal processes in ultra-alkaline pegmatites and hydrothermal veins cutting nepheline syenite massifs. ## Mineral Associations It co-occurs with other rare alkaline minerals, such as natroxalate, thermonatrite, villiaumite, aegirine, microcline, and nepheline. ## Localities The main and practically only significant occurrences of barentsite in the world are on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, in the Khibiny and Lovozero alkaline massifs (e.g., Mount Alluaiw).

## Quality Criteria The most valued specimens are those with well-formed, even if small, transparent crystals. Rich lamellar aggregates with a strong pearly luster, contrasting with darker host rock, are also highly prized. ## Popular Localities Classic and most desirable specimens come from the Khibiny and Lovozero massifs on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, which are the type locality for this mineral.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water. After cleaning, they should be dried immediately. Ultrasonic cleaners should not be used. ## What to Avoid Barentsite is a carbonate, so it reacts violently with acids, dissolving. Contact with any chemicals should be avoided. Due to its low hardness, it is susceptible to scratching. ## Storage Store in separate, padded boxes to avoid scratches and contact with harder minerals. Protect from dust and moisture.
