## Identification Key features for identifying baratovite are its characteristic pink to pinkish-violet color, platy or scaly structure, and pearly luster on cleavage surfaces. It is a soft mineral that can be scratched with a copper coin. It reacts with hydrochloric acid, which is also a diagnostic feature. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Baratovite can be confused with other pink minerals with a platy structure, such as some micas (e.g., lepidolite) or the rare charoite. It differs from lepidolite by the lack of perfect cleavage in one plane and often a more violet hue. From charoite, with which it co-occurs, it differs by its simpler, platy structure in contrast to charoite's fibrous-tangled texture. ## Crystal Forms Baratovite forms aggregates composed of thin, tabular or platy crystals, often arranged in a rosette or fan-like manner. Single, well-formed crystals are rarely found.
Geological environment
## Genesis Baratovite is a mineral of metasomatic origin. It forms as a result of the alteration of sedimentary rocks (limestones and sandstones) under the influence of alkaline syenite intrusions. It is a typical mineral of skarns and fenites formed in the contact zone of these two rock types. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other rare alkaline minerals. Its typical associations include aegirine, quartz, microcline, tinaksite, miserite, ekanite, and charoite, with which it forms characteristic parageneses in rocks from the Murun Massif. ## Localities The only known and confirmed locality of baratovite of commercial and collector significance is the Chara River region in the Murun Massif in Siberia, Russia. This is the type locality for this mineral, as well as for charoite.

## Quality Criteria The most prized baratovite specimens are those that exhibit an intense, evenly distributed pinkish-violet color. Well-formed aggregates of platy crystals, forming rosettes or fans, enhance their attractiveness. Large, undamaged aggregates are rare and sought after. Specimens where baratovite contrasts with other minerals, such as dark green aegirine, are also highly valued. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector specimens is the Murun Massif in Siberia, Russia. Specimens from this locality are considered classic and most desired by collectors of rare minerals.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Baratovite is a soft and delicate mineral, so it should be cleaned with great care. It is best to use a soft brush to remove dust. If necessary, it can be rinsed with clean distilled water, then immediately and thoroughly dried with a soft cloth. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with acids and other aggressive chemicals. Due to its low hardness, it is susceptible to scratches, so it should not be stored with harder minerals. It should not be cleaned with ultrasonics or steam. Protect it from impacts and falls. ## Storage Baratovite specimens are best stored in separate, padded boxes or on a soft surface in display cases, away from minerals of greater hardness.
