Baotite is a rare silicate mineral characterized by dark, square crystals and occurrence in alkaline rocks.

Description

## Characteristics Baotite is a rare barium, titanium, and niobium silicate, forming distinctive, well-formed crystals. They typically have a prismatic form with a square cross-section, which is a direct reflection of their tetragonal internal structure. Specimens most often range in color from brown to black, less commonly yellowish-brown. The luster can vary from vitreous to greasy, and on some surfaces, it may approach submetallic. The mineral is usually translucent on thin edges and opaque in thicker parts. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of baotite is 6, making it a relatively scratch-resistant mineral. Its density is significant, ranging from 4.4 to 4.7 g/cm³, which makes specimens heavy for their size. The mineral exhibits good cleavage in two directions, and its fracture is uneven to subconchoidal. ## Colors and Varieties The dominant coloration of baotite includes shades of brown and black. Some specimens may be lighter, yellowish-brown. There are no named color varieties or commercial varieties. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality – the Bayan Obo deposit in Baotou Prefecture, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. It was first described in 1959 by the Chinese mineralogist Peng Qirui. ## Uses Baotite has no industrial applications. However, it is a valued and sought-after collector's mineral due to its rarity and characteristic, well-formed crystals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification The most important diagnostic feature of baotite is its crystal habit – they are almost always prisms with a square cross-section. Other important features include high hardness (6 on the Mohs scale), significant density, brown to black color, and vitreous or greasy luster. Its occurrence environment is also characteristic. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Baotite is sometimes confused with other dark titanium minerals, such as rutile, which also crystallizes in the tetragonal system. However, rutile usually has a different crystal habit (acicular, prismatic) and often exhibits a reddish tint. From other similar minerals, e.g., from the pyrochlore group, baotite is distinguished by its tetragonal crystal symmetry (pyrochlore is isometric) and lower hardness. ## Crystal Forms Baotite crystals are prismatic, elongated, with a characteristic square cross-section. They are often terminated by flat faces. In addition to single crystals, it also forms granular aggregates and massive forms embedded in the host rock.

Geological environment

## Genesis Baotite is a mineral of high-temperature hydrothermal processes. It forms in quartz-calcite and quartz-barite veins that cut alkaline rocks, such as syenites, as well as in carbonatites. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with aegirine, albite, riebeckite, galena, pyrite, quartz, calcite, and fluorite. The suite of associated minerals is an important clue for identification. ## Localities The most important and classic locality for baotite is its type locality – the Bayan Obo deposit in China. Other known occurrences include Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec (Canada), the Ravalli County area in Montana (USA), and the Khibiny Massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia.

## Quality Criteria For collectors, the quality and form of the crystals are paramount. Sharp, undamaged, lustrous crystals with a distinct square cross-section are most highly prized. Size is also very important – crystals over one centimeter are already rare. The attractiveness of a specimen is enhanced by aesthetic compositions where the baotite crystal is set on a contrasting rock matrix, for example, on white calcite or quartz. ## Popular Localities The most famous and sought-after baotite specimens by collectors come from its type locality in Bayan Obo, China. They are characterized by their classic form and often occur in association with other rare minerals. Specimens from Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada, known for their excellent crystal development, are also highly valued.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Baotite specimens are best cleaned mechanically using a soft, dry brush to remove dust. For heavier dirt, distilled water can be used. Ultrasonic cleaners should be avoided, as they could damage the specimen along cleavage planes. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to strong acids. Avoid sudden temperature changes. It is stable in sunlight, but prolonged exposure is not recommended for any collector's mineral. ## Storage Baotite is relatively hard, but due to its cleavage, it should be stored in a way that protects it from impacts and falls. It is best kept in separate boxes or on stands in a display cabinet, away from minerals that could scratch it.
