Bambollaite is a very rare copper seleno-telluride, forming microscopic, hexagonal crystals with a metallic luster.

## Characteristics Bambollaite is an extremely rare mineral from the sulfide group, specifically a copper seleno-telluride. It occurs as very small, hexagonal, tabular or platy crystals, rarely exceeding 0.1 mm. It typically forms microcrystalline aggregates or coatings. Its appearance is typically metallic, with a color ranging from tin-white to steel-gray, often with an iridescent tarnish resulting from oxidation. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a metallic luster and is opaque. Due to the microscopic size of its crystals, precise determination of hardness is difficult, but it is estimated to be around 2 on the Mohs scale. It is a brittle mineral. ## Colors and Varieties Bambollaite is tin-white or steel-gray on a fresh surface. It quickly becomes covered with an iridescent, and then bluish-black, tarnish. No varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality – the Bambolla mine near Moctezuma in Sonora State, Mexico. It was described and approved as a new mineral in 1969 by Richard V. Gaines. ## Uses Bambollaite has no industrial applications. Its significance is purely scientific and as a collector's item, as an exceptionally rare representative of seleno-tellurides.

Preliminary recognition in a collection relies on knowledge of the locality (Bambolla mine), associated minerals (mainly tellurides and selenides), and its characteristic appearance – microscopic, hexagonal plates with a metallic luster, often with an iridescent tarnish. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other rare metallic-looking tellurides and selenides, such as klockmannite, umangite, or weissite. Visual differentiation is unreliable and requires specialized analysis of chemical composition and crystal structure. ## Crystal Forms Bambollaite forms thin, tabular or platy crystals with a hexagonal outline. It occurs as single, dispersed microcrystals or in small clusters and aggregates on the surface of other minerals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Bambollaite is a hydrothermal mineral. It forms in the oxidation zones of ore deposits rich in selenium and tellurium. At its type locality (Bambolla mine), it forms in vugs within volcanic rocks (rhyolites). ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other rare tellurides and selenides. At the Bambolla mine, it has been found in association with klockmannite, umangite, native tellurium, empressite, as well as quartz, barite, and hematite. ## Localities The only confirmed and well-documented locality for bambollaite worldwide is its place of discovery – the Bambolla mine, near Moctezuma in Sonora State, Mexico.

## Quality Criteria As an extremely rare "micromount" type mineral, every analytically confirmed specimen is valuable. Most highly prized are samples showing well-formed, even if microscopic, hexagonal bambollaite crystals, clearly standing out from the matrix. Rich association with other rare tellurides and selenides from the same locality is also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of collector specimens is the historical type locality – the Bambolla mine in Mexico. This mineral is not commercially mined, and specimens on the market come from old collections and are extremely difficult to acquire.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Bambollaite specimens should generally not be cleaned mechanically or chemically due to their extreme rarity, fragility, and microscopic size. Any attempt at cleaning risks irreversible destruction of the mineral. If absolutely necessary, dust can be carefully removed with a soft brush or a photographic air blower. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with all chemicals, acids, and detergents. The mineral is sensitive to oxidation upon contact with air, which causes tarnishing, so its exposure should be limited. It should not be heated or exposed to temperature changes. ## Storage Bambollaite specimens should be stored under stable conditions, preferably in sealed, closed "micromount" boxes that protect against dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Storage in an oxygen-free atmosphere or with desiccants may help slow down the oxidation process.
