Baksanite is a rare, silvery-white mineral from the bismuth sulfide and telluride group, forming thin, platy crystals.

## Characteristics Baksanite is a mineral belonging to the sulfide and telluride group. It occurs as very small, elongated or bladed crystals, rarely exceeding 1 mm in length and only a few micrometers in thickness. It forms aggregates with other bismuth sulfides and tellurides. Its appearance is metallic, with a silvery-white color and a tin hue. ## Physical Properties This mineral is characterized by a metallic luster and is opaque. Due to the small size of the crystals, precise determination of many physical properties, such as hardness or density, is difficult. The density calculated based on the chemical formula and unit cell parameters is 8.53 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Baksanite has a consistent, silvery-white color, sometimes with a tin hue. No color varieties or commercial forms are known. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1996 by S.A. Pekov, I.A. Bryzgalov, and M.F. Korotkov. Its name comes from the discovery locality – the Baksan River valley in Kabardino-Balkaria, North Caucasus, Russia. It was approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1995 (IMA1995-021). ## Uses Baksanite has no practical industrial application. It is solely an object of scientific and collecting interest for specialized collectors of microscopic minerals.

## Identification Identification of baksanite is impossible without advanced laboratory techniques. It requires chemical analysis (e.g., using an electron microprobe - EDS/WDS) to confirm the composition (bismuth, tellurium, sulfur) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods to determine the crystal structure. Visually, under high magnification, characteristic thin, bladed crystals with a metallic luster can be observed. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Baksanite is visually indistinguishable from many other related bismuth tellurides and sulfides, such as tellurobismuthite, joseite-A, joseite-B, or tetradymite, with which it often co-occurs. Certain differentiation is possible only based on chemical and structural analysis. ## Crystal Forms Baksanite crystals are very small, typically measuring up to 1 mm x 0.1 mm x 0.01 mm. They adopt the form of thin, elongated blades or plates, often slightly curved. They crystallize in the monoclinic system.

Geological environment

## Genesis Baksanite forms under hydrothermal conditions, in quartz-carbonate veins associated with granitoid intrusions. It occurs in telluride mineralization zones. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with a whole range of other tellurides and sulfides. In the type locality (Baksan Valley), it was found in association with native bismuth, tellurobismuthite, joseite-B, tetradymite, pilsenite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, quartz, and calcite. ## Localities Baksanite is an extremely rare mineral. Apart from the type locality in the Baksan River valley in the North Caucasus, Russia, its occurrence has been confirmed in only a few other places worldwide, including the St. Joe Mine in Delamar, Lincoln County, Nevada (USA).

## Quality Criteria As a microscopic mineral, the collector's value of baksanite is assessed differently than for macroscopic specimens. The most important criterion is the quality and abundance of crystals visible in the field of view under a microscope. Specimens with well-formed, sharp, and undamaged crystals are highly valued. Association with other rare minerals is also important, as it increases the scientific and aesthetic value of the specimen. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens available on the collector's market is the type locality – the Baksan River valley in Russia. Specimens from other confirmed localities are practically non-existent in collector circulation.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Baksanite specimens, due to their microscopic size and fragility, should generally not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Any attempts at cleaning may damage the delicate crystals. If dust removal is necessary, compressed air can be used from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with chemicals, acids, and cleaning agents. The crystals are extremely brittle and susceptible to mechanical damage. Specimens should not be exposed to extreme temperatures. ## Storage Microscopic baksanite specimens should be stored in specialized "micromount" boxes, which protect them from dust, shocks, and physical damage. Display should only be done under a microscope.
