Bakhchisaraitsevite is a rare, hydrated sodium and magnesium phosphate, forming small, spherulitic aggregates with a silky luster.

## Characteristics Bakhchisaraitsevite is a very rare mineral from the phosphate group. It occurs as small, radial or spherulitic aggregates, whose diameter usually does not exceed 1-2 mm. Individual crystals forming these aggregates are acicular or platy and very fine. ## Physical Properties Bakhchisaraitsevite crystals are flexible. This mineral exhibits weak, yellow fluorescence under ultraviolet light. It is readily soluble in cold hydrochloric acid (HCl). ## Colors and Varieties The mineral is colorless to white, with a silky luster on the surface of the aggregates. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Bakhchisaraitsevite was discovered in the Kovdor deposit on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. Its name, approved by the IMA in 1999, honors the Russian crystallographer and mineralogist Georgy P. Bakhchisaraitsev (1929-1995), a researcher of minerals from alkaline massifs. The first description of the mineral was made by a team led by J.A. Pekov in 2000.

Diagnostic features

## Identification A characteristic feature of bakhchisaraitsevite is its small, white, spherulitic aggregates with a silky luster. In field conditions, identification is practically impossible without specialized equipment. In the laboratory, the combination of occurrence form, optical properties, and chemical (EDS/WDS) and X-ray (XRD) analysis is key. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other white, fibrous secondary minerals occurring in similar environments, such as some zeolites or other rare phosphates. Certain differentiation requires advanced analytical methods. ## Crystal Forms It forms spherulites and radial aggregates composed of very fine, acicular or platy crystals, elongated along the [100] axis.

Geological environment

## Genesis Bakhchisaraitsevite is a secondary mineral, formed as a result of hydrothermal processes in carbonatites. It forms in the late stage of crystallization, filling small voids and fissures in the rock. ## Mineral Associations At the type locality (Kovdor), it coexists with dolomite, quartz, bobierrite, kovdorskite, manasseite, juonniite, and rimkorolgite. ## Localities The only confirmed and thoroughly described occurrence of this mineral in the world is the Kovdor massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. This is its type locality.

## Quality Criteria The quality of a bakhchisaraitsevite specimen primarily depends on the size and development of the spherulitic aggregates and their abundance on the rock matrix. The most desirable specimens are those with clearly formed, undamaged spherulites, contrasting with the darker host rock. Due to the microscopic nature of the mineral, specimens are evaluated mainly under magnification. ## Popular Localities All known collector specimens come from a single location in the world - the Kovdor deposit on the Kola Peninsula in Russia.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its fragility and solubility, this mineral should not be cleaned wet. Only very careful dust removal using a soft brush or a photographic blower is permissible. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, acids, and other chemicals must be strictly avoided, as the mineral dissolves easily in them. It should be protected from high temperatures, which can lead to water loss (dehydration) and structural damage. Specimens are very brittle and susceptible to mechanical damage. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, stable containers (so-called "micromount boxes") that protect against dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight and changes in humidity.
