Badalovite is an extremely rare sodium, magnesium, and iron arsenate, forming microscopic, dark brown crystals in the fumaroles of the Tolbachik volcano in Russia.

## Characteristics Badalovite is a mineral from the alluaudite group, occurring as very small, prismatic crystals, rarely exceeding 0.2 mm in length. It forms radial aggregates, chaotic clusters, and crusts on porous basaltic substrates. Its crystals range in color from dark brown to almost black and exhibit a strong luster. ## Physical Properties The luster of badalovite is described as vitreous, approaching resinous on some surfaces. It is an opaque mineral, becoming translucent only on the thinnest edges. The density calculated from the chemical formula and unit cell parameters is 4.15 g/cm³. Hardness has not been determined. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral is monochromatic – it occurs exclusively in shades of dark brown and black. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Badalovite was officially recognized as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2014. Its name honors Petros Tigranovich Badalov (1910–2009), an Uzbek geologist and specialist in ore deposits, who made significant contributions to geological research in the Almalyk region. The type locality and only known occurrence is the Arsenatnaya fumarole of the Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, badalovite has no practical applications. It serves solely as an object of scientific research and a valuable acquisition for specialized collectors of rare minerals and specimens from type localities.

Preliminary recognition is based on its characteristic occurrence (fumaroles of Tolbachik volcano), dark brown color, specific crystal habit, and co-occurrence with other arsenates. Definitive confirmation requires chemical analysis (e.g., by EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Badalovite can be confused with other dark minerals found in the same environment, such as tenorite, hematite, or other complex arsenates. Distinguishing it based on visual features is practically impossible. Chemical analysis, which reveals a unique combination of sodium, magnesium, iron, and arsenic, is crucial. ## Crystal Forms Badalovite forms short, prismatic crystals, often imperfectly developed. They usually occur as radial or tangled aggregates, as well as thin crusts on volcanic rocks.

Geological environment

## Genesis Badalovite is a mineral of volcanic origin, formed by sublimation from hot gases (exhalations) in the fumarole vent zone. It crystallizes at very high temperatures, exceeding 600°C, in an environment rich in arsenic, sodium, and other metals, on a basaltic substrate. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in association with other rare fumarolic minerals, such as arsenatrotitanite, anhydrite, hematite, tenorite, sanidine, aphthitalite, johillerite, as well as various as-yet-unnamed arsenates. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of badalovite in the world is its type locality: the Arsenatnaya fumarole, located on the second cinder cone of the Northern Breakthrough of the Great Fissure Eruption of Tolbachik volcano (1975-1976) on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia.

An additional advantage is association with other rare minerals from this locality. ## Popular Localities All badalovite specimens available on the collector market come from a single location – the Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka. It is a mineral available almost exclusively in specialized circulation, among collectors of rare species and systematic minerals.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Badalovite specimens are extremely delicate and small. They should not be cleaned mechanically or chemically. Only dust removal with a gentle stream of compressed air is permissible. Avoid all contact with water and other liquids. ## What to Avoid The mineral contains arsenic, making it toxic. Avoid inhaling dust and wash hands after any contact with the specimen. It must be protected from moisture, acids, detergents, and all chemicals. As a fumarolic mineral, it may be unstable under surface conditions, especially in humid environments. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in tightly sealed “micromount” containers, which protect against dust, moisture, and mechanical damage. Each container should be clearly labeled, including information about the mineral's toxicity.
