Babunait-(Nd) is a neodymium arsenate, named after the Babuna River in North Macedonia, where it was discovered.

## Characteristics Babunait-(Nd) is a neodymium arsenate belonging to the monazite group. This mineral forms very small, tabular or prismatic crystals, usually not exceeding 0.2 mm in size. It occurs as individual crystals or small aggregates. It is transparent to translucent and exhibits a vitreous luster. ## Physical Properties Due to the small size of the crystals, many physical properties, such as hardness or density, have not been precisely determined. The density was calculated based on the chemical formula and unit cell parameters and is 5.61 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Babunait-(Nd) ranges in color from light pink to purplish-pink. No varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was approved by the IMA in 2023 (IMA2023-043). Its name refers to the Babuna River, near which the mineral's type locality is situated – a quartz vein in the vicinity of Nežilovo, North Macedonia. The -(Nd) suffix in the name indicates the dominant rare earth element – neodymium.

## Identification Identification of babunait-(Nd) is possible only through advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, electron microprobe (EDS/WDS), or X-ray diffraction (XRD). Visual identification in the field or in a collection is impossible due to its microscopic size and similarity to other minerals of the monazite group. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other minerals of the monazite group, such as monazite-(Nd) or cheralite-(Nd). Definitive differentiation requires chemical analysis to confirm the dominance of arsenic over phosphorus and neodymium over other rare earth elements. ## Crystal Forms It forms tiny, tabular or prismatic crystals up to 0.2 mm long, often with a spindle-shaped outline.

Geological environment

## Genesis Babunait-(Nd) forms under hydrothermal conditions. At its type locality, it was found in vugs and fissures within a massive quartz vein cutting biotite gneisses. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with quartz, alsharite, filipovite, florencite-(La), florencite-(Nd), goethite, hematite, rutile, and other REE arsenates. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of babunait-(Nd) in the world is its type locality: a quartz vein near the village of Nežilovo, Veles Municipality, North Macedonia.

## Quality Criteria Due to its extreme rarity and microscopic size, every babunait-(Nd) specimen is a valuable scientific and collector's acquisition. Specimens with well-formed crystals, intense color, and set on a contrasting matrix (e.g., in a quartz vug) are most highly prized. The presence of associated minerals is also important. ## Popular Localities The only source of specimens is the type locality in North Macedonia. Material from this location is extremely difficult to obtain and appears on the collector's market sporadically, mainly in specialized circles.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Due to its extreme rarity and small crystal size, mechanical cleaning is not recommended. If absolutely necessary, compressed air can be used to remove loose dust particles. Avoid contact with water and chemicals. ## What to Avoid Avoid all chemicals, especially acids, which can react with arsenates. The mineral should be protected from ultrasound, high temperatures, and mechanical shocks. ## Storage Babunait-(Nd) specimens should be stored under stable conditions, in a specialized, sealed "micromount" box, protecting them from dust, moisture, and physical damage. Storage in darkness is recommended to avoid potential light effects on color.
