Asbecasite is a very rare beryllium, calcium, and titanium arsenite, prized for its characteristic lemon-yellow, tabular crystals.

## Characteristics Asbecasite is a complex silicate and arsenite that forms small but well-developed crystals. They typically occur as sharp, flattened rhombohedra with a tabular habit. Its most distinctive feature is its intense, lemon-yellow to greenish-yellow color. The crystals have a strong, vitreous luster and can be transparent, which, combined with their vivid color, makes them visually very attractive despite their small size. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively hard, with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, which is unusual for arsenic-bearing minerals. It has a density of approximately 3.73 g/cm³. It does not exhibit cleavage, and its fracture is conchoidal. It is brittle, so specimens should be handled with care. ## Colors and Varieties The predominant color of asbecasite is bright yellow, lemon, sometimes transitioning to greenish-yellow or, more rarely, brownish hues. No named color varieties or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The name asbecasite, given in 1966 by Stefan Graeser, is an acronym derived from the chemical components of the mineral: arsenic (As), beryllium (Be), calcium (Ca), and silicon (Si). It was discovered and described based on specimens from Alpine fissures in the Cherbadung area of the Binn Valley (Binntal) in Switzerland, which is its type locality. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity, asbecasite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a highly prized collector's mineral.

## Identification Key features for identifying asbecasite are its unique lemon-yellow color, high hardness (6.5-7), vitreous luster, and characteristic form of flattened, tabular rhombohedra. Its occurrence is almost exclusively limited to alpine hydrothermal fissures. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Asbecasite can be confused with other yellow minerals. - **Native sulfur** is much softer (hardness 1.5-2.5). - **Mimetite** is also much softer (hardness 3.5-4) and usually forms hexagonal crystals or reniform aggregates. - **Titanite (sphene)** has similar hardness but forms crystals with a different, wedge-shaped habit and crystallizes in the monoclinic system. - **Sphalerite** is softer (3.5-4), has perfect cleavage, and often a resinous, rather than vitreous, luster. ## Crystal Forms Asbecasite crystallizes in the trigonal system. Most commonly, these are small, sharp rhombohedra, strongly flattened along the crystallographic axis, giving them the appearance of thin tablets or plates. It also occurs as granular aggregates and as thin crusts.

Geological environment

## Genesis Asbecasite is a hydrothermal mineral associated with metamorphic processes. It forms under low-temperature conditions in open fissures and fractures of metamorphic rocks, such as gneisses and amphibolite schists, characteristic of the Alps. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with quartz, hematite, rutile, anatase, brucite, and other arsenic minerals such as tennantite, duftite, mimetite, or gasparite-(Ce). ## Localities The most important and well-known worldwide locality for asbecasite is its type locality – Cherbadung in the Binn Valley (Binntal) in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. Specimens have also been found in other places in the Alps, including Italy (Piedmont) and Austria. Outside Europe, its presence has been reported in Japan (Gozaisho mine).

## Quality Criteria The most highly prized asbecasite specimens are those with sharp, well-formed, and transparent crystals of intense, lemon-yellow color. A contrasting matrix, such as white quartz or dolomite, which highlights the color and form of the crystals, is also of great importance. Specimens with multiple crystals or in association with other rare minerals from the Binn Valley are particularly sought after. ## Popular Localities By far the most desired specimens by collectors come from the classic locality in the Binn Valley, Switzerland. They are considered the global standard for this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Asbecasite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush and distilled water to remove dust and loose contaminants. Due to its brittleness and rarity, ultrasonic cleaners and strong chemical agents are not recommended. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and impacts. Contact with acids and other aggressive chemicals should be avoided. Despite its good hardness, it should be protected from contact with harder minerals that could scratch it. ## Storage It is best to store specimens in separate, padded display boxes to prevent abrasions and mechanical damage. A label with the name and locality is standard. It should be protected from dust and direct, prolonged sunlight, although its effect on fading is not known.
