Arzrunite is an extremely rare, hydrated lead and copper sulfate and chloride, forming blue, acicular crystals in volcanic exhalation products.

## Characteristics Arzrunite is a sulfate mineral that visually presents as aggregates of small, acicular or prismatic crystals. It typically forms radiating or tangled aggregates. Its most characteristic feature is its intense, sky-blue to blue-green color. The crystals, though small (usually less than 1 mm long), exhibit a strong, vitreous luster, making them attractive microminerals. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of 2 to 3. It is brittle and has a calculated density of approximately 3.55 g/cm³. The crystals are transparent to translucent, with a vitreous luster. The streak is light blue. ## Colors and Varieties Arzrunite occurs in uniform shades from sky-blue to blue-green. No color varieties or commercial varieties have been identified. ## History and Name The mineral is named in honor of Andreas Arzruni (1847–1898), an Armenian-Russian mineralogist and professor of mineralogy at the University of Aachen in Germany. It was officially recognized as a new mineral species by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1996. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and small crystal size, arzrunite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a prized acquisition in advanced systematic collections and micromineral collections.

## Identification Key features for identifying arzrunite are its characteristic blue color, acicular crystal habit, and specific volcanic occurrence environment. Vitreous luster and a light blue streak are also helpful. However, final confirmation requires advanced chemical (EDS) or X-ray (XRD) analyses. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Arzrunite can be confused with other blue secondary copper minerals such as linarite, chalcanthite, or connellite. It differs from linarite in crystal habit and the presence of chlorine. Chalcanthite is water-soluble and does not contain lead. Visual identification is difficult, and knowledge of the specimen's origin is crucial – arzrunite is known from only one locality worldwide. ## Crystal Forms It forms elongated, prismatic or acicular crystals, which often arrange into radiating, stellate, or haphazardly tangled aggregates. It rarely occurs as single, isolated crystals.

Geological environment

## Genesis Arzrunite is a secondary mineral that crystallizes directly from hot volcanic gases (exhalations) within fumaroles. It forms as a result of the reaction of gases rich in copper, lead, sulfur, and chlorine with atmospheric oxygen at relatively high temperatures. ## Mineral Associations At its only known locality, arzrunite coexists with minerals such as anglesite, hematite, and native gold. It is also accompanied by other rare volcanic sublimation products. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for arzrunite worldwide is the fumarole field of the Naboko cone, part of the Tolbachik volcanic complex on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. This is its type locality.

## Quality Criteria The quality of arzrunite specimens, being a typical micromineral, is assessed based on several criteria. Samples with rich, dense aggregates of well-formed, sharp, and lustrous crystals are most highly valued. An intense, pure color and contrast with the rock matrix are also important. Association with other rare minerals from this locality is an additional advantage. ## Popular Localities All specimens available on the collector's market come from a single locality: Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka, Russia. It is an extremely difficult mineral to acquire, appearing in the offerings of specialized rare mineral dealers.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Arzrunite specimens are extremely delicate and sensitive. To remove dust, use only a soft, dry brush or carefully blow off dust with a stream of air from a photographic blower. Absolutely avoid contact with water and any chemical agents. ## What to Avoid Avoid water, ultrasonic cleaners, all solvents, and acids. The mineral is sensitive to moisture, temperature changes, and mechanical shocks. The crystals are very brittle and easily damaged. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in sealed "micromount" containers, preferably with a desiccant (e.g., silica gel). They should be protected from dust, direct sunlight, and sudden temperature changes.
