It typically occurs as colorless or white, elongated crystals with a prismatic habit, often forming radial or fibrous aggregates. It can also occur in granular masses. It is a brittle mineral. ## Physical Properties Aristarainite crystals have a hardness of approximately 3.5 on the Mohs scale. They exhibit a vitreous luster, and in the case of fibrous masses, a silky luster. It is a transparent to translucent mineral, with a density of 2.03 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Aristarainite is usually colorless or white. No colored varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name The mineral was named in honor of Lorenzo Francisco Aristarain (born 1926), an Argentine geologist and mineralogist who made significant contributions to the study of borate deposits. It was described and approved as a new mineral in 1974. ## Uses Due to its rarity, aristarainite has no industrial application and is solely of interest to collectors and scientists studying borate deposits.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Aristarainite can be identified by its typical prismatic crystals, often forming fibrous or radial aggregates. Its vitreous or silky luster is also characteristic. Reaction to water (partial solubility) is a diagnostic feature, but it is sample-destructive. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other borates of similar appearance, such as ulexite or colemanite, which often occur in the same environments. Ulexite forms characteristic, parallel fibers exhibiting the "television stone" effect, which is not observed in aristarainite. Colemanite has a higher hardness (4.5) and perfect cleavage. Final differentiation requires advanced research methods, such as X-ray diffraction. ## Crystal Forms Crystals are prismatic, elongated along the crystallographic axis. They typically occur as radial or fibrous aggregates, as well as granular masses.

Geological environment

## Genesis Aristarainite is an evaporitic mineral. It forms by precipitation from boron-rich solutions in drying salt lakes (playas) under desert and semi-desert climatic conditions. It forms in lacustrine sediments, mainly in clays. ## Mineral Associations It often co-occurs with other borate minerals, such as kernite, ulexite, colemanite, borax, as well as halite and gypsum. ## Localities The most important and type locality (localitas typica) is Salar del Hombre Muerto in Salta Province, Argentina. It is also known from several other localities worldwide, including Boron in Kern County, California (USA), and the Bigadiç region in Turkey.

## Quality Criteria The most valued specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, transparent crystals, forming attractive, radial aggregates. Crystal size and absence of damage are also important. The purity of the specimen and an aesthetic association with other associated minerals, e.g., halite, increase its value. ## Popular Localities By far the most desirable specimens come from the type locality in Argentina (Salar del Hombre Muerto), which has yielded the best known crystals of this mineral. Specimens from California are also present on the collector's market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Aristarainite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. The mineral is partially soluble in water, so contact with water, especially hot water, should be avoided. If liquid is necessary, the specimen can be very carefully wiped with a cloth minimally dampened with alcohol, ensuring quick evaporation. ## What to Avoid Contact with water, acids, and other chemicals must be absolutely avoided. The mineral is sensitive to heat. It should not be heated or exposed to prolonged strong sunlight. ## Storage Aristarainite is a brittle mineral and sensitive to moisture. It should be stored in a dry place, preferably in a closed, padded box or display case, away from heat sources and sudden temperature changes. It is advisable to consider using desiccants in the storage area.
