Arfvedsonite is a rare sodium amphibole, prized by collectors for its dark, prismatic crystals with a characteristic, multicolored iridescence.

## Characteristics Arfvedsonite is a complex silicate from the sodium amphibole group, forming a solid solution series with magnesio-arfvedsonite. Its crystals are typically elongated, prismatic, often terminated by steep pyramids. It also occurs as fibrous, radial, or granular aggregates. A distinguishing feature of arfvedsonite is its strong pleochroism, meaning a change in color depending on the viewing direction, as well as a characteristic blue-green or purplish play of colors on cleavage surfaces, especially visible in specimens from Mont Saint-Hilaire. ## Physical Properties Arfvedsonite crystals exhibit a hardness of 5.5-6 on the Mohs scale. The luster is vitreous, and on cleavage planes, it can be pearly. The mineral is usually opaque, rarely translucent in thin fragments. Its density ranges from 3.37 to 3.55 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Arfvedsonite ranges in color from black to dark green or bluish-black. In transmitted light, it reveals its strong pleochroism in shades from dark green, through blue-gray, to yellowish-brown. There are no formal varieties, but specimens from different localities may vary in color intensity and iridescence. ## History and Name The mineral was named in 1823 by Henry James Brooke in honor of the Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson (1792-1841), the discoverer of the element lithium. Arfwedson was the first to study this mineral. The type locality (locus typicus) is the Ilímaussaq alkaline complex in Greenland. ## Uses Arfvedsonite has no industrial significance. However, it is a valued and sought-after collector's mineral, especially well-formed crystals from rare localities.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Arfvedsonite is most easily recognized by its dark color (black, dark green), prismatic crystal habit, and characteristic, often multicolored iridescence on cleavage surfaces. A key feature is the angle between cleavage planes, approximately 124°, typical for amphiboles. In thin fragments under a microscope, it exhibits very strong pleochroism. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Arfvedsonite is sometimes confused with other dark amphiboles, such as hornblende or riebeckite, as well as pyroxenes (e.g., aegirine). It differs from hornblende by the often presence of bluish hues and stronger pleochroism. From aegirine, with which it often co-occurs, it differs by the cleavage angle (pyroxenes have cleavage at an angle close to 90°). Riebeckite usually has a more blue color and often forms asbestos-like aggregates (crocidolite). ## Crystal Forms Arfvedsonite crystals are typically long, bladed or columnar prisms. They often form radial or stellate aggregates, embedded in the host rock. Single, well-formed crystals are less common.

Geological environment

## Genesis Arfvedsonite is a characteristic mineral of alkaline-rich (sodium and potassium) and silica-poor igneous rocks. It forms in the late stages of crystallization in nepheline syenites, alkaline pegmatites, and also in some alkaline granites and volcanic rocks, such as phonolites. ## Mineral Associations This mineral often co-occurs with other minerals typical of alkaline environments. The most common associations include: nepheline, albite, microcline, aegirine, sodalite, eudialyte, astrophyllite, as well as rarer zirconium and titanium minerals. ## Localities The most important and well-known arfvedsonite localities in the world are: - **Mont Saint-Hilaire**, Quebec, Canada - home to some of the world's best, sharply terminated crystals with strong iridescence. - **Ilímaussaq complex**, Greenland - the type locality, where it occurs in pegmatites as large crystals. - **Kola Peninsula**, Russia (Khibiny and Lovozero massifs) - known for large, black crystals in nepheline syenites. - **Zomba**, Malawi - provides well-formed crystals in association with aegirine. - **Pikes Peak**, Colorado, USA - occurs in alkaline granites.

## Quality Criteria The most prized by collectors are specimens with well-formed, sharply terminated crystals that are freestanding or aesthetically embedded in a light rock matrix (e.g., on albite or nepheline). Key features that increase value include large crystal size, intense luster, and a distinct, multicolored play of colors on the surface. Specimens from classic localities, such as Mont Saint-Hilaire, are particularly sought after. ## Popular Localities Collectors most value arfvedsonite from Mont Saint-Hilaire in Canada due to its unique form and aesthetics. Large, well-formed crystals from the Kola Peninsula in Russia and from Greenland are also highly regarded. Specimens from Malawi, often in attractive contrast with green aegirine, are popular in the market.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Arfvedsonite specimens should be cleaned carefully, using a soft, dry brush to remove dust. If necessary, distilled water can be used, but prolonged soaking should be avoided. Always thoroughly dry the specimen after wet cleaning. ## What to Avoid Arfvedsonite is sensitive to strong acids, which can damage it. Ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning should be avoided, as vibrations and temperature changes can cause fractures along cleavage planes. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight is not recommended. ## Storage Specimens should be stored in stable conditions, away from sources of moisture and sudden temperature changes. Due to its perfect cleavage, it is susceptible to mechanical damage, so it should be stored in separate boxes or display cases, away from harder minerals that could scratch it.
