Anyuiite

Anyuite is an extremely rare, natural gold-lead alloy, occurring as microscopic grains in river sediments.

## Characteristics Anyuite is a natural intermetallic compound (alloy) of gold and lead. It occurs as very small, irregular or rounded grains, typically not exceeding 0.5 mm in size. It is opaque, with a metallic luster. In reflected light, its color is described as grayish-white with a distinct yellowish tint. Due to its microscopic size, its visual characteristics can only be studied under a microscope. ## Physical Properties The mineral's hardness is approximately 2.5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft. It has a very high density, calculated at 15.15 g/cm³, resulting from the presence of heavy elements - gold and lead. It is characterized by a metallic luster and is completely opaque. ## Colors and Varieties Anyuite has a constant chemical composition and does not form color varieties. Its uniform, grayish-white color with a yellow tint is a characteristic feature. ## History and Name The mineral was first described in 1989 by L.V. Razin and G.A. Sidorenko. Its name comes from the discovery location - the Bol'shoi Anyui River in the Bilibino District, Chukotka, Russia. ## Applications Anyuite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific interest and a valuable acquisition for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Identification of anyuite is impossible without specialized equipment. Due to its microscopic size and occurrence as inclusions, it requires chemical analysis using an electron microprobe (EDS/WDS). ## Differentiation from Similar Minerals Under a microscope, it can be confused with other natural alloys, such as novodneprite (AuPb₃) or chatyrkite ((Cu,Zn)Al₂), as well as native lead or gold. Only chemical composition analysis provides certain differentiation. ## Crystal Forms Anyuite crystallizes in the tetragonal system. In nature, it is found exclusively in the form of anhedral (irregular), rounded grains and aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Anyuite forms in ultramafic rock complexes. It has been found in alluvium (river sediments) washed out from an as-yet unidentified serpentinite massif. ## Mineral Associations It most often co-occurs with native gold (often as an inclusion), as well as with other rare minerals such as novodneprite (AuPb₃) and chatyrkite ((Cu,Zn)Al₂). ## Localities The only confirmed and described locality of anyuite in the world is its type locality - the alluvium of the Bol'shoi Anyui River in Chukotka, Russia.

## Quality Criteria The collector's value of a specimen with anyuite does not depend on its aesthetics, but on the confirmed presence of this extremely rare mineral itself. Specimens are usually gold nuggets or rock fragments with microscopic anyuite inclusions. Care and storage

## Cleaning Specimens containing anyuite (usually as inclusions in gold) should only be cleaned mechanically, using a soft brush to remove dust. Avoid water and any chemical agents. ## What to Avoid The mineral is soft and susceptible to scratches. As a lead compound, it is potentially toxic - avoid direct skin contact and wash hands after any contact. Protect it from moisture and chemicals that could cause oxidation. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in closed, dry containers (e.g., "membrane box" type boxes) to limit air and moisture access and protect against accidental contact.
