Diagnostic features
## Identification Antofagastaite is difficult to identify visually without specialized equipment. Characteristic features include white, silky aggregates of very fine, acicular crystals. A key diagnostic feature is its water solubility. Confirmation of identity requires advanced analytical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other white, fibrous sulfates, such as gypsum (especially its acicular selenite variety) or mirabilite. Gypsum is much softer and not as readily soluble in cold water. Other similar evaporite minerals also require chemical analysis for unambiguous differentiation. ## Crystal Forms This mineral forms elongated, acicular or bladed crystals. They typically occur as radial, stellate, or haphazardly tangled aggregates, as well as coatings and efflorescences on other minerals.
Geological environment
## Genesis Antofagastaite is a secondary mineral, formed by weathering processes in extremely arid (desert) conditions. It forms in the oxidation zones of ore deposits, where sulfate-rich waters react with sodium and calcium-bearing rocks. It is an evaporite product, crystallizing from aqueous solutions under low humidity conditions. ## Mineral Associations At the type locality (La Vendida mine), antofagastaite coexists with other rare sulfates, such as kröhnkite, blödite, ferronatroite, and tamarugite. It is also associated with hematite and quartz. ## Localities The only confirmed and thoroughly described occurrence of antofagastaite in the world is its type locality – the La Vendida mine, Sierra Gorda district, in the Antofagasta region of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.

## Quality Criteria As a microscopic mineral, antofagastaite is primarily valued by collectors specializing in rare species (so-called "micromounts") or minerals from specific localities (so-called "locality collectors"). The most highly rated specimens are those showing well-formed, radial aggregates of acicular crystals, contrasting with the color of the host rock. The abundance of aggregates and association with other rare sulfates also increase the specimen's value. ## Popular Localities The only source of antofagastaite specimens is the La Vendida mine in Chile. Material from this location is extremely rare on the collector's market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Antofagastaite specimens are extremely delicate and sensitive to water. Any contact with liquids should be avoided. Mechanical cleaning is impossible due to the fragility and small size of the crystals. The safest method for dust removal is to use a soft brush or carefully blow air. ## What to Avoid The mineral is water-soluble, so contact with water and high humidity must be strictly avoided. It should be protected from all chemicals, acids, and detergents. The crystals are very brittle and fragile, thus requiring careful handling. ## Storage Antofagastaite must be stored in a dry place, preferably in a sealed, airtight box (e.g., a "membrane box") or in a display case with controlled humidity. Protect from dust and mechanical damage. Due to its sensitivity, it is not suitable for display in open collections.
