Anandite is a rare, black mica group mineral, characterized by excellent cleavage and the presence of barium in its chemical composition.

## Characteristics Anandite is a rare mineral belonging to the brittle mica group. It forms tabular or lamellar crystals, often gathered into rosette-like or fan-shaped aggregates. Its characteristic features include a black, opaque color and a vitreous to metallic luster on cleavage surfaces. It is a brittle mineral, and its thin lamellae are not as elastic as those of more common micas. ## Physical Properties Anandite is characterized by a hardness of approximately 4 on the Mohs scale. Its density is relatively high, ranging from 3.91 to 3.97 g/cm³. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction, which is typical for mica group minerals. The luster is vitreous to slightly metallic, and the mineral is opaque. ## Colors and Varieties This mineral occurs in a uniform, black color. No color or commercial varieties are distinguished. ## History and Name Anandite was first described in 1967 by S. W. Bailey and B. E. Brown. Its name comes from Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy (1877-1947), director of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, in recognition of his contributions to the mineralogy and petrology of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). ## Uses Due to its rarity, anandite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of interest for collectors of rare minerals and scientists.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Anandite can be identified by its black color, lamellar form, and perfect cleavage in one direction, typical of micas. Its vitreous-metallic luster on cleavage planes and relatively high density for a mineral of this group are also characteristic. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Anandite is most often confused with biotite, which is also a black mica. However, anandite differs in the greater brittleness of its lamellae (biotite lamellae are elastic) and higher density. Final differentiation often requires advanced chemical analysis to confirm the presence of barium. ## Crystal Forms Anandite crystals typically form thin to thick tabular crystals with a pseudohexagonal outline. They usually occur as lamellar, rosette-like, or fan-shaped aggregates.

Geological environment

## Genesis Anandite is a mineral of metamorphic origin. It forms under conditions of contact metamorphism, in zones where magmatic intrusions contact carbonate rocks (e.g., limestones). It occurs in rocks known as skarns. ## Mineral Associations This mineral co-occurs with other minerals typical of skarns, such as magnetite, andradite (a garnet variety), diopside, wollastonite, as well as calcite and plagioclase. ## Localities The most important and classic locality (type locality) for anandite is the Wilagedara mine in Sri Lanka. Other known localities include Sterling Hill in New Jersey (USA) and the Jacupiranga iron deposit in Brazil.

## Quality Criteria The most prized specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, sharp crystals with a pseudohexagonal outline, forming aesthetic rosettes or fans. Strong luster and absence of mechanical damage are also important. Specimens on a contrasting rock matrix (e.g., on white calcite) are more highly valued. ## Popular Localities By far, the most sought-after specimens come from the type locality in Sri Lanka, which has yielded the best known crystals of this mineral.

Care and storage

## Cleaning Anandite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, using a soft brush to remove dust. Due to its perfect cleavage, washing under running water, which could separate the lamellae, should be avoided. If liquid is necessary, it is recommended to use a small amount of distilled water or isopropyl alcohol, applied locally with a cotton swab. ## What to Avoid Contact with acids and other aggressive chemicals should be avoided. The mineral is brittle, so it must be protected from impacts, falls, and scratching. It should not be subjected to ultrasonic cleaners. Prolonged exposure to moisture can be harmful. ## Storage Anandite specimens are best stored in separate, padded collector boxes to prevent mechanical damage and contact with harder minerals. They should be protected from dust and moisture.
