Alcaparrosaite is a very rare, hydrated potassium, titanium, and iron sulfate, forming acicular crystals of an amber color.

Description

## Characteristics Alcaparrosaite is a sulfate mineral that visually presents as small, radial aggregates. These consist of prismatic or acicular crystals, rarely exceeding one millimeter in length. Its aggregates have a delicate, fibrous structure. ## Physical Properties This mineral is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of 4. It is transparent to translucent, with a vitreous luster. The calculated density is 2.80 g/cm³. ## Colors and Varieties Alcaparrosaite occurs in uniform shades, from yellow to amber-brown. No color varieties or commercial forms are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name comes from its discovery locality – the Alcaparrosa mine in the El Loa Province, Chile. It was officially recognized by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2014. This is the only known locality for this mineral worldwide. ## Applications Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence only as microscopic crystals, alcaparrosaite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific research and a valuable acquisition for specialized collectors of rare minerals.

## Identification Characteristic features of alcaparrosaite include its occurrence as radial aggregates of acicular crystals, amber color, and vitreous luster. ## Genesis It is a secondary mineral, formed as a result of volcanic fumarole activity. It crystallizes directly from hot gases (sublimates) in a sulfur-rich environment. ## Mineral Associations At its only known locality, it co-occurs with other fumarolic minerals, such as alunite and hematite, as well as other rare sulfates. ## Localities The only confirmed locality for alcaparrosaite worldwide is its type locality – the Alcaparrosa mine, located near the city of Calama in the Atacama Desert, Chile.
