Alburnite is an extremely rare germanium and silver sulfide and telluride, found as microscopic grains in Romania.

Description

## Characteristics Alburnite is a mineral with a metallic luster and a grayish-white color that dulls and darkens to grayish-black over time. It occurs as very small, anhedral (irregularly shaped) grains, usually as inclusions in sphalerite. Due to the microscopic size of its crystals, its visual characteristics are difficult to observe without specialized equipment. ## Physical Properties The Mohs hardness of alburnite is approximately 4. This mineral is opaque, and its density, calculated based on its chemical composition and unit cell parameters, is 7.83 g/cm³. No cleavage has been observed, and its fracture is uneven. ## Colors and Varieties The only known color of alburnite is grayish-white, with a tendency to darken upon exposure to air. No color or commercial varieties have been distinguished. ## History and Name Alburnite was officially recognized as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2011. Its name comes from "Alburnus Maior," the Latin name for the historical mining district of Roșia Montană in Romania. The type locality (locus typicus), from which the first described specimens originated, is the Săcărâmb mine (formerly Nagyág) in Hunedoara County. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence only as microscopic grains, alburnite has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific and collecting interest.

Diagnostic features

## Identification Amateur identification of alburnite is impossible. Recognition requires advanced laboratory techniques, such as electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), to confirm its unique chemical composition (Ag, Ge, Te, S). It occurs as microscopic, anhedral grains embedded in other minerals, most often in sphalerite. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Visually, it is indistinguishable from many other gray, metallic sulfides and tellurides, such as galena, hessite, tetrahedrite, or other ore minerals. Definitive distinction is only possible based on chemical analysis. ## Crystal Forms Well-formed alburnite crystals have not yet been observed. It occurs exclusively as anhedral (irregularly shaped) grains not exceeding several tens of micrometers in size.

Geological environment

## Genesis Alburnite forms in low-sulfur, epithermal gold, silver, and telluride deposits. It originates under hydrothermal conditions, crystallizing from solutions rich in silver, germanium, tellurium, and sulfur. ## Mineral Associations This mineral occurs in paragenesis with other ore minerals. In its type locality, it was found in association with sphalerite, galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, stützite, hessite, sylvanite, petzite, nagyágite, and native gold. ## Localities The only confirmed locality of alburnite in the world is its type locality - the historic Săcărâmb mine (Nagyág) in Hunedoara County, Romania.

Care and storage

## Cleaning As a microscopic mineral, usually found on a matrix, alburnite should not be wet-cleaned. Any dirt should be removed with utmost care, using at most a soft brush or compressed air from a safe distance. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, chemicals, and ultrasound. Alburnite dulls upon contact with air (oxidation), so its exposure to moisture and atmospheric pollutants should be limited. ## Storage Specimens containing alburnite are best stored in closed, dry containers, such as "perky boxes," which protect against dust, mechanical damage, and changes in air humidity.
