Description
## Characteristics Akopovait is a mineral from the carbonate group, chemically classified as a hydrated aluminum and lithium hydroxycarbonate. It occurs as very fine, hexagonal, platy crystals, reaching up to 0.1 mm in size. However, it typically forms earthy, chalk-like, or porcelain-like aggregates and masses. Its dominant and only known color is white. A characteristic feature is its pearly luster, best visible on cleavage planes. ## Physical Properties This mineral is very soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 2. It is light, with a density of 2.15 g/cm³. It exhibits perfect cleavage in one direction, which, combined with the small crystal size, contributes to its pearly luster in mass. It is translucent. ## Colors and Varieties Akopovait occurs exclusively in white. No colored varieties or commercial names are known. ## History and Name The mineral's name, approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 2006, honors the Kazakh mineralogist Nadezhda Borisovna Akopova (born 1920), who studied the deposit where the discovery was made. Akopovait was first identified in the Kurganskoe boron deposit in eastern Kazakhstan. ## Uses Due to its extreme rarity and occurrence in small aggregates, akopovait has no industrial applications. It is solely an object of scientific and collecting interest for specialized rare mineral collectors.

## Identification Amateur identification of akopovait is practically impossible. Clues may include its chalk-like or porcelain-like appearance, white color, pearly luster, extreme softness, and specific co-occurrence with other minerals. Certain identification requires advanced analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD). ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals It can be confused with other white, earthy minerals, such as hydrotalcite, manasseite, and even common clay minerals like kaolinite or chalk. Differentiation is based on chemical analysis and knowledge of paragenesis and location – akopovait occurs in a very specific geological environment. ## Crystal Forms It forms microscopic, hexagonal, platy crystals. In macroscopically visible form, it occurs as compact, earthy, chalk-like, or porcelain-like masses and aggregates.

## Genesis Akopovait is a secondary mineral, forming in the oxidation zone of boron deposits. It forms in cavities of carbonate rocks (calcite-dolomite-siderite). ## Mineral Associations It most commonly co-occurs with minerals such as strontianite, calcite, dolomite, ankerite, siderite, and quartz. ## Localities The only confirmed occurrence of akopovait in the world is its type locality – the Kurganskoe boron deposit, in the East Kazakhstan Region of Kazakhstan.

This is the only source for obtaining this mineral.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Akopovait is extremely delicate and soft. To remove dust, use only compressed air from a safe distance or a very soft, dry brush. Contact with water is absolutely inadvisable, as it can damage or dissolve the mineral. ## What to Avoid Avoid contact with water, acids, detergents, and any other chemicals. The mineral is sensitive to moisture, shocks, and scratches. Do not clean it in ultrasonic or steam cleaners. ## Storage Akopovait specimens should be stored in a dry place, preferably in an airtight container (e.g., a micromount box), to protect them from moisture, dust, and mechanical damage. It should be isolated from harder minerals that could scratch it.
