Diagnostic features
## Identification Key diagnostic features of aikinite include its metallic luster, lead-gray color, high density, low hardness, and characteristic form of elongated, acicular crystals, often with longitudinal striations. The streak is blackish-gray. ## Distinguishing from Similar Minerals Aikinite can be confused with other sulfides and sulfosalts of similar appearance, such as bismuthinite, stibnite, or boulangerite. It differs from bismuthinite (Bi₂S₃) by the presence of lead and copper in its composition, which requires chemical analysis. Stibnite (Sb₂S₃) is even softer and has perfect cleavage in one direction. Boulangerite often forms fibrous or plumose aggregates, rather than single, well-formed acicular crystals. ## Crystal Forms It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system. It forms acicular or long-prismatic crystals, usually elongated and striated parallel to the principal axis. It also occurs as rod-like aggregates, radial aggregates, or as massive, embedded grains in rock.
Geological environment
## Genesis Aikinite is a mineral of hydrothermal origin. It forms in medium- and high-temperature ore veins, often of a polymetallic nature. ## Mineral Associations It often coexists with other ore minerals. Its most common associations include native gold, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, bismuthinite, tetrahedrite, as well as quartz, ankerite, and other vein minerals. ## Localities The most important aikinite localities worldwide include the historical type locality in Berezovskoye in the Urals, Russia. Other known occurrences include Baita Bihor in Romania, mines in the Redruth area of Cornwall (United Kingdom), and numerous localities in the United States (e.g., in Arizona, California, and Montana). It also occurs in the Djebel Aouam mine in Morocco.

## Quality Criteria The most valued specimens by collectors are those with well-formed, sharp, and undamaged acicular crystals. Samples in which shiny, metallic aikinite crystals are set against a contrasting, light background, such as white quartz, are highly prized. The size of the crystals and the absence of damage are important. Co-occurrence with other rare minerals, especially gold, significantly increases the collectible value of the specimen. ## Popular Localities Classic, historical specimens come from the Russian Urals. Beautiful, acicular crystals have also been found in Romania (Baita Bihor). In recent years, specimens from some US localities have also appeared on the collector's market.
Care and storage
## Cleaning Aikinite specimens should be cleaned very carefully, preferably dry, using a soft brush to remove dust. If water is necessary, it should be distilled water, and the specimen should be thoroughly dried immediately to prevent oxidation and tarnishing. Ultrasonic cleaners should not be used. ## What to Avoid The mineral is sensitive to acids and other chemicals. As a soft mineral, it is susceptible to scratches and mechanical damage. Avoid storing it in a humid environment, which accelerates oxidation and surface dulling. ## Storage It is recommended to store specimens in a dry place, preferably in closed boxes or display cases, which limits air and moisture access, slowing down oxidation processes. It should be isolated from harder minerals to prevent scratching.
